RISING’s Deep Throat Drive-In is devised by celebrated cinematographer Sandi Sissel with Willoh Weiland and James Brennan. It is a rewilding of the drive-in space. It journeys through Sissel’s forty year career in journalism and film, examines misogynistic tropes and affirms non-binary and gender diverse bodies in cinema.

Annie Sprinkle is a groundbreaking performance artist who began her career in pornographic film, she has taken part in filmmaking, writing, photography, artwork, teaching workshops, and performing. A sex-work pioneer, an AIDS educator, and out “metamorphosexual“, Annie Sprinkle was one of the first women to champion the term “sex positive feminist“.

Sandi Sissel is an American cinematographer, director and producer. She’s best known for her work on the documentary Chicken Ranch where she was behind the lens filming sex workers in a legal brothel in Nevada.


Annie and Sandi converse to dissect the social and cultural issues that surrounded the porn industry throughout their time working in it, and examine the backlash by the mainstream media regarding pornographic films. They also discuss how the terms ‘pro-sex feminist’ and ‘pro-porn feminist’ originated, as well as giving a no frills account of what it was like living in the golden era of pornography.

Rising’s Deep Throat Drive-In additionally screens Rear View by Set Piece creators Anna Breckon and Nat Randall; has a raging punk intermission by Melbourne band Hacker; and will be screening Cheryl Dunye's seminal 1996 New Queer Cinema work The Watermelon Woman.
